Leg Length Discrepancy – Treatment at the Paley European Lengthening Center

A difference in the length of the lower limbs affects gait, pelvic alignment, and the distribution of stress on the hips, knees, and spine. If you suspect you have leg asymmetry, your first step should be to consult an orthopedist. At the Paley European Lengthening Center, we begin treatment with a detailed assessment of the musculoskeletal system.

Shorter Leg – Treatment using the PRECICE method

One of the solutions used at the center is the PRECICE system. The method uses a telescopic intramedullary nail that is placed entirely within the bone. After performing an osteotomy—that is, a controlled cut through the bone—the implant’s mechanism is activated using an external magnetic controller.

The nail gradually increases the distance between the bone segments, and the body forms new bone tissue in the resulting space. The rate of lengthening is controlled by the doctor and can be adjusted depending on the healing process, the condition of the soft tissues, and the results of follow-up examinations.

An advantage of the internal system is that it does not involve any metal components passing through the skin. However, this does not mean that the treatment is risk-free. The possible benefits, limitations, and potential complications are discussed with the patient before surgery.

The LON Alternative Method

The LON (Lengthening Over Nail) method combines internal stabilization with a temporary external fixator. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a controlled cut in the bone, inserts an intramedullary nail into the bone canal, and then applies an external fixator. The fixator allows for the gradual separation of the bone fragments during the distraction phase. New bone tissue forms in the space created between them, while the intramedullary nail helps maintain the achieved length and stability of the limb.

Once the planned correction has been achieved, the external fixator can be removed, while the nail continues to stabilize the bone during the mineralization and remodeling phases. As a result, the duration of external fixator use is shorter than in methods that rely solely on such a stabilizer. The exact course of treatment and the timing for removing individual components are determined by the doctor based on follow-up examinations.

Rehabilitation During Limb Lengthening

Treatment for a shorter leg does not end with surgery. The procedure is followed by a phase of gradual lengthening and then a consolidation period, during which the new bone matures and gains strength. Throughout the entire process, the patient remains under the care of doctors and physical therapists.

Rehabilitation is a crucial stage of treatment. Rehabilitation during treatment for lower limb asymmetry is aimed at maintaining range of motion, muscle flexibility, and a normal gait pattern.

How can I increase my height?
The potential for further growth depends primarily on biological age and the condition of the growth plates. In children and adolescents, long bones grow thanks to cells located in the growth plates. The rate of this process is influenced by genetic factors, hormonal balance, diet, physical activity, sleep quality, and overall health. If a child is growing more slowly than their peers, they require a pediatric evaluation […]

Limb Lengthening – Cost of the Procedure
How much does limb lengthening cost? The price of the procedure depends on the chosen method, the length of the bone being lengthened, the number of implants, and whether the treatment is performed in one or two stages. The scope of the planned care and the number of procedures required in a specific case are also important factors. According to the current price list of the Paley European Lengthening Center, the cost of bilateral femur lengthening using the PRECICE method is […]
